Rhondda Cynon Taff Rapid Deployment Cameras
Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT) is home to over 240.000 people and sits in the heart of the South Wales Valleys.
Following a recent upgrade of its security scheme, the county now boasts one of the most sophisticated CCTV systems in the UK.
Committed to keeping its residents and visitors safe, the Council continues to evolve its CCTV coverage utilising re-deployable cameras that provide an agile solution to combat the shifting nature of criminal activity.
A re-deployable unit is attached to a lighting column or lamppost and connects to its power source.
The Council's Safety Partnership Team will work with, and assess, the information from partners and decide if they will redeploy a unit to that location.
The existing system suffered from poor integration into the central system and was no longer fit for purpose due to the poor-quality images delivered by the 3G network.
Part-funded by the Safer Streets Initiative, the Council sought to increase and upgrade their re-deployable units.
CDS is the incumbent supplier for RCT Council and has worked with the team for many years, including the design and installation of the recent scheme upgrade.
The project brief required the addition of seven new units to the Council's re-deployable CCTV assets, offering a rapid increase in their coverage.
To meet their on-going community safety challenges, the Council asked CDS to create a purpose-built solution that delivered cost savings, increased operational flexibility and improved performance.
Developed tech and protocols from previous projects were combined with the Bosch TTZ Dome camera, giving it a bespoke 4G mobile phone router that builds a VPN from the camera back to NVR in Sardis House and the Control Room in Tonypandy.
Stainless steel adjustable metal straps attach the whole unit to the column with a weather-proof 16 am socket providing connectivity. The Router boots into life and then the camera starts talking to the control room.
Secure end to end, the camera is fully integrated and acts as part of the full CCTV system with minimal latency, delivering high-quality images for a 4G signal.
Improvements also included increased picture quality at night, 30x optical zoom and a more functional and manoeuvrable camera.
The purpose-developed Bosch units are in operation and have enabled the Council to widen its areas of coverage to crime hot spots.
Understanding the importance of community safety, CDS responds rapidly when the Council needs to relocate a unit to a newly identified hot spot area.
Having previously been responsible for redeploying the units in-house, the Safer Community Team can now save significant time and money, allowing them to focus on their key result areas.
The integrated system provides dramatically improved picture quality, delivering precise, reliable evidence for the authorities to use when convicting criminals.
“RCT council work closely with South Wales Police and other agencies to provide a safer community. In addition to the existing public space surveillance systems the Council provides a re-deployable CCTV solution for problematic Hot Spot areas. CDS have delivered a suitable cost effective solution that integrates seamlessly into the existing operating system. They provide an excellent re-deployment service very often at short notice, sending first-class quality images to the operations team..”
