Royal Holloway University Case Study

BACKGROUND

The Royal Holloway University of London is not only one of the most prestigious universities in the World, it is also a visual icon, appearing as the inspirational backdrop in cinematic blockbusters such as Harry Potter and Avengers Endgame.

Since the unveiling of the famous Founders building in 1886 by Queen Victoria, the Royal Holloway University has grown to six schools, with 21 academic departments where approximately 10,500 under- and post-graduate students from over 100 countries study.

Consistently recognised as one of the safest campuses in the UK, CDS has worked with the Royal Holloway University's award-winning Security Team to maintain and evolve their security systems since 2017.

PROJECT INITIATION

CDS first became involved with the Royal Holloway University when they were completing their new state of the art Library - the Evelyn Wilding Davison Building.

CDS were made aware of the project through a supplier who encouraged us to bid for the installation of the CCTV system.

We were delighted to win the £280k project to design and install the CCTV system and as a result of our approach and expertise, we were invited to quote for other aspects of work on the campus, including the on-going maintenance of their security systems.

DELIVERY

Over the last three years, our support to the Royal Holloway University has continued to evolve along with their security needs.

When we first assessed the existing CCTV system, it included several older camera units that were still fit for purpose in many operational scenarios.

CDS developed and implemented a new control system that would enable the Royal Holloway University to initiate a phased approach to this significant system upgrade.

The phased approach would assist in minimising cost and impact based on risk. In an ever-changing world where new risks can emerge, CDS worked with the security team to identify hot spots where new panoramic, high definition cameras should be installed, while the older models were moved to more supported areas.

Enabling our clients to manage the transition period, when upgrading a system, is one of our key strengths. Our experienced team are fully aware of the day-to-day pressures on the security and operational personal.

Through excellent project management processes, technological solutions and practical approaches, we help organisations upgrade their security systems whilst minimising disruption on campus and the impact on their ongoing security requirements.

PROJECT COMPLETION

As our relationship developed with the Royal Holloway University, CDS were also asked to maintain and develop other aspects of the security network including the intruder alarm system.

After our assessment of their needs, CDS expanded the control system to include both the CCTV, intruder alarms and fire alarms, giving the Royal Holloways Security Team a central hub to control the vast majority of their system from one location.

We are currently working with the Security Team to integrate elevator alarms to complete the scope of the control system across all aspects of the campus security operation.
