Vale of White Horse Council CCTV Case Study

BACKGROUND

CCTV is a vital instrument in the fight against crime in Oxfordshire, supporting the police with a range of issues including identifying missing persons and various other public issues from, car parking to flooding.

The Vale and South Oxfordshire Council is comprised of two distinct district councils, The Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire, who work in collaboration with each other on many projects.

With an ageing CCTV system covering six towns across their boundaries, the Vale and South Oxfordshire Council approached CDS Security Systems to provide a solution that would see a phased modernisation of their surveillance systems.

PROJECT INITIATION

Setting aside approximately £40k to replace the existing system, The Vale & South District Council had relied on a twenty-year-old control system which managed 128 CCTV cameras across the towns of Abingdon, Wantage, Henley, Wallingford, Didcot and Thame.

The first step in the project was to replace the old Control Room system, which was now so old that its components were no longer in manufacture, to enable on going maintenance.

Understanding the financial pressures on organisations, we often work with our clients to plan a phased approach to the upgrade of their surveillance scheme, enabling a more comfortable delivery of the project budget.

The first stage was to install a new, robust Control System that could integrate with the existing hardware, effectively controlling the old analogue cameras whilst allowing the gradual upgrade of the CCTV units.

The new HDMI Cameras provide image quality that is four times clearer than their old analogue counterparts.

In addition, they enable a more modern transfer of digital evidence through a cloud system, enabling the Police to access specific footage without having to visit the Control Centre.

The new Control System is sufficiently sophisticated to incorporate system developments such as facial recognition and other analytical software, that can be integrated with future upgrades.

PROJECT COMPLETION

Thanks to our strong relationship and body of work with The Vale and South Oxfordshire Council, the CCTV upgrade continues to be an ongoing project as we deliver the phased approach across the borough.
